Michael Eccleston and Katy Willis spent months searching for a place in Salt Lake City to open an arcade-themed bar. Then a friend suggested they look at the old Manhattan Club on the corner of 400 South and Main. The 7,000-square-foot space was not only the right size and price, it also came with a built-in piece of Salt Lake City history. “We love old things and old places,” said Willis, “and one of the things we’re excited about is keeping this space as a bar.” Their Quarters Arcade Bar, expected to open in early 2018, will become the newest chapter in the colorful story of this beloved basement bar. Park City • Rock star Dan Reynolds was once a Mormon missionary, and in a documentary that premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, he declares a new mission: to urge leaders of his faith to stop shaming their LGBT members. “A determined Mormon is a scary thing, I can tell you that, because they don’t stop,” Reynolds, singer for the band Imagine Dragons, declares in “Believer,” a documentary that received a standing ovation from some 500 Sundance attendees at its first screening late Saturday night. The movie will receive a broader audience this summer, director Don Argott told the audience after the film. “Believer” was picked up before the festival by HBO Documentary Films, with plans for a theatrical release this summer and a debut on HBO after that.
