Woman says Weinstein yelled, ‘You owe me!’ before raping her

New York • A key accuser in Harvey Weinstein’s trial testified Friday that he raped her twice, once bellowing, “You owe me!” as he dragged her into a bedroom. The first time, the heavyset Hollywood tycoon trapped her in a New York hotel room in March 2013, angrily ordered her to undress as he loomed over her, and then raped her, she told jurors. Still, she kept in touch, sending him flattering emails, because “his ego was so fragile,” she said, and it “made me feel safe, worshipping him in this sense. … I wanted to be perceived as innocent and naive.” [ Read More: ‘The Assistant’ aims to go behind the headlines of #MeToo and the Harvey Weinstein scandal ] Then, eight months later at a Los Angeles hotel where she worked as a hairdresser, she told Weinstein that she was dating an actor, she said. “You owe me one more time!” he screamed, she told jurors. She said she begged him not to take off her clothes, but he said, “I don’t have time for games” and ripped off her pants before

Utah legislative panel OKs bill regulating disposal of fetal remains after abortions or miscarriages

A bill requiring health care providers to either bury or cremate the fetal remains of an abortion or miscarriage, and allowing mothers to choose between those options, earned committee approval on Friday. Members of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee voted 4-2 along partisan lines to advance the bill to the full Senate. Bill sponsor Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, said the bill is intended to ensure that fetal remains are treated with dignity and respect, and to provide additional options to women in the state. “Today, when a woman has a miscarriage or an abortion, those remains are treated as medical waste and thrown out as so much refuse,” he said. Bramble began his presentation to committee members by criticizing media coverage of his bill, saying it had been misrepresented as forcing women to bury or cremate fetal remains. While it does regulate disposal of remains, he said, those requirements are placed on health care providers and not the women who experience a miscar

Holly Richardson: Women belong in the House and the Senate

Image
In Gov. Gary Herbert’s final State of the State address , he asked the female elected officials to stand and be recognized. “You are proving that a Utah woman’s place is in the House and in the Senate,” he said. He also reminded listeners that it was 150 years ago that Seraph Young became the first woman in the nation to vote, on her way to work. Utah does have a rich pioneer tradition of recognizing the contributions of women at home, at church, in the workplace and the voting booth. Better Days 2020 has made meaningful strides in helping Utahns remember their HERitage, but Utah still remains toward the very bottom on the list when it comes to women in elected office, especially if you are a Republican woman. I know, I know. You don’t vote based on gender, and that you would for for a woman, just not that woman. Of course, that just means you vote for the man on the ballot. Got it. This column’s not for you. U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said it well when she noted that “

After Kobe Bryant’s death, Lakers’ chaplain seeks Scripture to help cope

Los Angeles • All Romell Witherspoon can do is pray and reflect as he prepares for this weekend’s game at Staples Center between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers. On Friday night, Witherspoon will be stepping into the downtown Los Angeles arena that fans refer to as “The House That Kobe Built.” For the past three years, Witherspoon has spiritually guided NBA players as the chaplain for the Lakers. Using Scripture, he helps the team as well as opposing players mentally prepare before home games at Staples. But this time he knows it will be different. It’s been four days since Kobe Bryant; his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna; and seven others died Sunday morning in a helicopter crash in the hills above Calabasas, Calif. “This is not something that anybody has practice in,” said Witherspoon, 33. “This is a different level, if you will, because the way he [Bryant] impacted each individual personally is different. “What I often say is that the presence of trouble d

Appeals court acquits French cardinal of sex abuse cover-up

Lyon, France • A French appeals court on Thursday threw out a lower court ruling convicting a French cardinal of covering up the sexual abuse of minors in his flock, a decision culminating a drama that has produced angst for the Roman Catholic Church and reawakened a past of pain and shame for some of the victims seeking justice. Cardinal Philippe Barbarin said he will nevertheless ask Pope Francis to allow him to resign — repeating a request that was refused earlier by the pontiff, who wanted to await the outcome of the appeals trial. Thursday’s court decision “allows me to turn a page and for the church of Lyon to open a new chapter,” Barbarin said at a brief news conference. He said he would go to Rome “if the Holy Father wants to meet me,” to “renew my request.“ “Today, always, my thoughts go to the victims,” Barbarin added. “With many brothers and sisters, I will continue to pray every day for them and their families.” For its part, the Vatican said in a statement that it cl

In digital State of the County address, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson reflects on accomplishments, ‘tough’ choices

Image
Reflecting on her first full year in office, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said she “hit the ground running,” garnering increased funding in her first budget for public safety and domestic violence and taking part in an “unprecedented” collaborative effort to address homelessness across the county. But she had to make some “tough” choices, as well, including the proposal of an unpopular property tax increase the council approved at the end of last year . “Looking back, I had to do something that no new mayor wants to do: I had to propose a tax increase,” she said. It “kept me up at night,” Wilson shared, but she said she ultimately felt the approved 7.8% hike was the right call in aligning the county’s budget for the future. “I think in the end we all feel pretty good about where we are,” she said. “We did not have to decrease our revenue that was so critical for operation and maintenance of our facilities, our parks. We were able to do a little bit of a salary increase, as

Sanders defines a Jewish identity his way on the 2020 campaign trail

New York • Bernie Sanders is approaching next week’s Iowa caucuses in a position to become the first major-party Jewish presidential nominee in the nation’s history. And at a time of resurgent anti-Semitism, he’s talking in more depth about how his faith shapes his broader worldview. Soon after the one-year anniversary of the massacre at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue , Sanders penned a column on combating anti-Semitism that outlined how his family’s history underpins his commitment to fight bigotry. After five New York Jews were stabbed while celebrating Hanukkah last month, Sanders used an Iowa menorah-lighting to connect his immigrant father’s journey to America, “fleeing anti-Semitism and fleeing violence,” to ideals he described as imperiled by attacks on Jews — and other minority groups. Sanders tweeted a video last week featuring his campaign’s Jewish outreach director, Joel Rubin, discussing the Vermont senator’s “intrinsically Jewish values.” Sanders has described hi

Take a look inside one of Utah’s first legal marijuana farms

Image
In an 80-degree room in Tooele, hundreds of marijuana plants bask under an amber light, synthesizing chemical compounds that will soon serve as medicine for Utah patients. This flowering room is tucked inside a secure warehouse, which has other spaces devoted to the cloning, raising, drying and curing of some of the state’s first legal marijuana. Only seven months ago, these were completely empty spaces — just cement floors and metal beams. At that point, Utah’s medical cannabis program was similarly skeletal. There were no plants, no growing spaces, no pharmacy owners. Just words in state law. “It’s been a pioneering effort,” Randy Gleave, senior vice president of operations for Tryke Companies Utah said Thursday during a ribbon-cutting at the warehouse. But despite the compressed timeline, plants are already on drying racks in Tryke’s warehouse, and company representatives said they’ll have raw flower ready by March 1, the target date for debuting Utah’s full-fledged medical can
